1982 Mild and sunny, but a rather dull Summer and wet October
In the year that a British task force successfully liberated the Falkland Islands after they were captured by Argentinians, Spain joined NATO, Helmut Kohl replaced Helmut Schmidt as Chancelllor of West Germany, and Yuri Andropov took over from the late Leonid Breznev as leader of the Soviet Union. In the music world, 'Thriller' by Michael jackson was released and the chart-topper of the year in the UK was 'Come on Eileen' by Dexy's Midnight Runners.
Weather Notes:-
8th-10th January -  The temperature fell to minus 27°C at Braemar and Grantown-on-Spey on the 8th, and after blizzards affected the South and the English Midlands on the 8th and 9th, the temperature fell to minus 26°C. near  Newport (Shropshire).
11th July - 113mm of rain fell at Bruton (Somerset)
4th August - Nearly 124mm of rain fell at Ely (Cambridgeshire) in 3 hours.

January - Rather dry with above normal sunshine and slightly below average temperatures

The first 5 days of the year were mostly mild or very mild and unsettled. A marked change occurred at the end of the first week with the high falling from 12°C. on the 5th to 4°C. on the 6th. Snow fell on the 8th and 9th and, over snow cover,  the temperature stayed a degree below freezing on the 10th. On the night of the 13th/14th the low was minus 10°C. Further frosty nights occurred, temperatures rose, and from the 20th,it was mostly mild and changeable.

February - Mild and rather dull with below average rainfall.

The first fortnight was mostly mild or very mild. On the 9th, the temperature reached 13°C. It was changeable, but there were several dry and fairly sunny days and rainfall was mostly light. During the third week,  east or northeast winds set in and it became rather cold and often dull with occasional drizzle, and a little sleet, at times. There were some more sunny days, but the month ended with a return to mild, cloudy and damp, southwesterly winds.

Much of the month was changeable and often windy. Rain bands seldom lingered long,  and between weather systems there was plenty of sunshine. From the 22nd, high pressure controlled the weather. At first, there were sunny days and the temperatures rose steadily. On the 26th the maximum was 17°C. However, over the last few days of the month the anticyclone receded westwards and allowed cooler, cloudier northerly winds  to develop. 
April Rather mild, sunny and wet.

After an unsettled start  to the month, a brief incursion of warm southeast winds brought sunshine on the 4th and 5th, with the high on the 5th almost reaching 21°C. It then became unsettled for a while before cool northwest winds developed. High pressure built across the country at the end of the second week, and no measurable rain fell between the 11th and the 28th. On the 21st and 22nd the high was 18°C., but the last week was cloudier and cooler at times.

The month began cool, unsettled and often wet. On the 6th, there were 26mm of rain with a noon temperature of only 6°C. The high for the day was 10°C. It became warmer, sunnier and mostly dry from the middle of the second week with highs in the low 20s C., but cooler, changeable weather returned on the 19th. Apart from a cool and thundery day on the 27th, much of the last week was sunny and warm. On the last day of the month the high was just under 27°C.

June Warm and wet with below average sunshine.

The first week was very warm or hot, and although there were some thunderstorms, there was also plenty of sunshine. On the 4th, the temperature exceeded 29°C. Early in the second week it became cooler and more changeable, although there were also some warm and sunny days.On the 22nd, over 25mm of rain fell as an area of low pressure moved northeast across central Britain, and unsettled weather then continued for the remainder of the month. 
July - Dry and rather dull with temperatures close to average.

The opening fortnight was rather unsettled, and although temperatures were near normal at first, some very warm or hot days developed. On both the 8th and 9th there were highs of 28°C., with 27°C., recorded on the 13th. High pressure dominated the weather after mid month, but it was often situated to the north or northwest of the country and sometimes brought rather cloudy skies and temperatures  rather below normal. The month ended with thundery rain.
August Rather warm and dry with slightly below average sunshine.

The opening week of August was very warm and fairly sunny. On both  the 2nd and 3rd,, the temperature almost reached 28°C. There were some thundery showers before slightly cooler air spread from the west. After mid month a series of frontal systems crossed the country from west to east bringing bands of rain, and although there were sunny periods in between, temperatures were near, or rather below, normal and the days were often unseasonably windy. 

September - Warm and rather dry with above average sunshine.

The beginning of the month was unsettled but with some warm, sunny days and very little rain.  It became warmer during the second week with plenty of sunshine, and on the 15th the maximum temperature was above 28°C. Fine, very warm, conditions continued until the 18th then cooler, unsettled, and often windy, weather spread from the west and this persisted until the end of the month. On the 29th, the maximum temperature was only 14°C. 

October Dull and wet with below average temperatures.

Although there was a short spell of settled weather in the last week, the month was generally very changeable, frequently windy and often quite cool. There were no warm days, although temperatures were above normal at times during the first and last weeks with the maximum temperature above 18°C. on the 1st. It was dull and wet at times, and on the 20th there were 28mm of rain, with a maximum temperature on the following day of only 11°C. 
November Mild and rather sunny with below average rainfall.

This was a changeable month, but with winds frequently from a southwesterly direction, it was often mild or very mild. On the 1st, the temperature reached 18°C., and there were several days through the month when maximum temperatures reached 15 or 16°C.  Rain fell at regular intervals through the month but it was often light and drizzly. The last 3 days of November became rather cold, but it was dry with sunshine, and sharp overnight frosts occurred. 
December Above average rain and sunshine and near normal temperatures.

During the first week there was plenty of dry, if rather cloudy, weather with temperatures near, or rather below,  normal. It became milder during the 7th, as a changeable, and often windy, spell occurred. On the 15th the temperature rose above 13°C. It became colder before Christmas, and after freezing fog on the night of the 22nd/23rd, with a low of minus 5°C., the high during the day was only 1°C. It became mostly mild and changeable during the last week.
