11th-12th June - After a 'mini' heatwave severe thunderstorms broke out across England and Scotland with damaging hail, large enough in places to cause injuries.
12th July - 94mm of rain fell in 75 minutes during the afternoon at Ilkley (West Yorkshire) in a month that had several days with temperatures exceeding 32°C.
8th September - Devastating hurricane hit Galveston (Texas) killing an estimated 8,000 persons.

January - Rather wet with above average temperatures and slightly below normal sunshine.
In this changeable month, temperatures were near, or rather above normal during most of the first fortnight. It was often cloudy, and sometimes wet, and on the 7th nearly 14mm of rain fell. Late in the second week it became colder with frosty nights, but also with plenty of sunshine. After an early frost on the 14th, the temperature during the day only rose to 2.7°C. Mild and changeable weather soon returned, and the temperature on the 24th almost reached 12°C.
February - Very wet, rather cold and dull.
The first half of February was mostly cold and changeable with a mixture of rain, sleet and snow. Snow settled at times and there were several severe frosts. The temperature was below minus 7°C. early on the 9th, and only rose to 0.1°C. durig the day. A rapid thaw of lying snow occurred around mid month aided by over 12mm of rain on the 15th. The remainder of February was less dull, but still unsettled. It was milder, and the high on the 26th was close to 14°C.
March - Very dull, cold and dry.
The early part of March was mostly dull with rain, drizzle and occasional sleet. It was cold at times, and the maximum temperature on the 6th was only 4.3°C. It became milder for a while during the second week, and the maximum temperature reached 13°C. There was a cold and changeable third week, and on the 19th nearly 7mm of rain fell. There were some brighter days with a few frosty nights between rain bands, but the end of the month became dull again.
April - Dry with below average temperatures and slightly above normal sunshine.
The beginning of April was cold with some frosty nights, but it was also changeable with sunshine and showers, and some longer spells of rain. The maximum temperature on the 1st was only 5.7°C., and on the 3rd over 8mm of rain fell. The last frost of the month occurred early on the 9th, and then the weather became warmer with several dry and fairly sunny days. It was sunny all day on the 18th, and the maximum temperature on the 21st reached 23°C.
May - Cool, dry and rather dull.
There were some, dry, bright and warm days early in May. On the 6th, the afternoon temperature almost reached 21°C. It became much cooler during the second week, and the maximum temperature on the 13th was only 9.3°C. There was plenty of cloud during the second and third weeks, but the 15th was fairly sunny, and there were several chilly nights. Towards the end of the month the weather became more unsettled, and on the 22nd nearly 7mm of rain fell.
June - Rather wet and dull with temperatures slightly below normal.
The first week of June was mostly rather cool, cloudy and changeable. The maximum temperature on the 1st was only 11.5°C. There was a short-lived sunny and warm spell during the second week. On the 10th it was sunny all day, and the afternoon temperature on the following day reached 30°C. After mid month, the unsettled weather prevailed, and although temperatures were not far from normal, it was often cloudy. On the 25th, over 12mm of rain fell.
July - Very sunny, warm and dry.
The start of July was changeable with temperatures mostly near,normal. The maximum on the 7th was only 16.7°C. After the 6th, no measurable rain fell until the 27th and from the 10th it became very warm, or hot, and sunny. On 3 days, the 16th, 19th and 20th, temperatures approached 32°C. It was humid at times, and on the night of the 22nd/2rd the minimum temperature was near 20°C. Almost 13mm of rain fell on the 27th and it then became cooler.
August - Rather cool with above average rainfall and slightly below normal sunshine.
There was changeable and rather cool weather during the early part of August. The maximum temperature on the 9th was only 15.7°C. There were a few fine and warm days in the latter part of the second week and during the third week. The afternoon temperature on the 18th rose above 27°C. The fourth week became cooler and unsettled, and this changeable weather then lasted for the rest of the month. On the 23rd, over 13mm of rain was recorded.
September - Dry and sunny with near normal temperatures.
It was rather cool and changeable at first in September. On the 1st, nearly 10mm of rain was recorded, but this was 1 of only 7 days during the month with measurable rainfall. The maximum temperature on the 3rd was only 15.6°C., but during the second week it became sunnier and warmer. On the 16th, the afternoon temperature rose above 26°C. There were further sunny and rather warm days during the rest of September, although some cool nights occurred.
October - Sunny and rather dry with below normal temperatures.
Much of the first fortnight of October was dry and fairly warm with sunny spells. On the 8th, it was sunny all day, and the temperature rose above 21°C. Towards the end of the second week it became cooler, and the maximum on the14th was only 9.5°C. After mid month, although day-time temperatures were close to normal, nights were often rather cool. Towards the end of October it became increasingly unsettled, and on the 30th over 14mm of rain fell.
November - Rather dry, mild and dull.

Rain was mostly light, but on the 7th, over 7mm fell. A rare sunny day on the 10th was followed by a frosty night but days were generally mild. However, the maximum temperature on the 19th was only 7.1°C. Changeable weather continued into the last week, and a further 7mm of rain fell on the 25th.
