1913 Dull and Rather Dry. A Cool, Dry and Dull Summer.
In the year that George the First of the Hellenes, the elected King of Greece, but once a Danish Prince, was assassinated, the Treaty of London was signed to end the First Balkan War, and English Suffragette Emily Davison died after being hit by the King's horse Anmer during the Epsom Derby.
Weather Notes:-
12th January - Up to 40cm of level snow were measured in the Peak District and southern Pennines.
17th September - 'Great rainstorm' at Doncaster (South Yorkshire) was thought to have produced over 150mm of rain.
27th October - Devastating tornado, 300m wide travelled north-northeast from south Devon to Cheshire between 1600 and 2100 hours. Three people were killed and scores were injured.

January - Mild and rather wet with below average sunshine.
The first week was mostly mild and changeable. During the second week it was rather cold for a while, and on the 11th, rain, preceded by snow, gave nearly 10mm of measurable rain. Cold weather returned temporarily at the end of the second week, and after an overnight low near minus 4°C., the maximum temperature on the 13th was only 3.0°C. The unsettled weather then continued until the end of the month but it was mild. The high on the 23rd was over 11°C.
February - Very dull, dry and rather mild.
There was a changeable start to February, and on the 1st, over 5mm of rain was recorded. It was mild, with the temperature on the 4th almost reaching 12°C. The second week was quiet and fairly mild with spells of sunshine, but after mid month there was plenty of dull and damp weather. Pressure remained high, though, and amounts of rain were small. There were a few cold days late in the month, and on the 20th the maximum temperature was only 2.2°C.
March - Wet, rather mild and fairly dull.
A rather cold start to March was accompanied by a maximum temperature of only 5.9°C. on the 1st. Generally, though, temperatures were near, or rather above, normal during the first fortnight with rather cloudy skies and occasional light rain or drizzle. On the 15th, the day was sunny, but on the following day nearly 10mm of rain was recorded. There were a few more bright days during the second half of March, and on the 29th the temperature rose close to 14°C.
April - Wet, rather dull and cold.
Much of April was cloudy and very unsettled with showers, or longer spells of rain. There were some rather cold days during the first half of the month, and on the 12th, the temperature only rose to 6.3°C. The last air frost of the Spring occurred on the following night, and then temperatures slowly rose. Over the last 10 days of the month there were some dry and sunny days, and on the 24th, the high was near 19°C. However, on the 29th, nearly 13mm of rain fell.
May - Rather warm with above average sunshine and near normal rainfall.
The first 3 weeks of the month were changeable, often rather cloudy, and with temperatures near, or rather below, normal. On the 4th, it was cool with a maximum temperature of only 11.4°C. The weather improved considerably towards the end of the month, and after a day of unbroken sunshine on the 25th, the maximum temperature on the 26th was close to 27°C. It became thundery at times during the last week, and on the 30th, nearly 17mm of rain fell.
June - Very dry, with below average sunshine and temperatures.
Most of the first half of June was dry and rather cool, with large amounts of cloud. However, towards the end of the second week it became sunnier and warmer. On the 15th, it was sunny all day and on the following day the temperature rose above 28°C. It became rather unsettled and cooler during the third week, and on the 20th nearly 5mm of rain fell, 1 of only 5 days during June when measurable rain fell. On the 24th, the maximum temperature was only 16.2° C.
July - Very dull, cool and rather dry.
Pressure was high over, and to the northwest, of the country during much of July bringing cool, and cloud-laden northeasterly winds. Occasional rain fell, much of which was light, but on the 15th it rained for most of the day resulting in a total above 27mm. On the 23rd, the maximum temperature was only 14.6°C., but the weather then improved with the last week dry, and although no warm days occurred, the afternoon temperature on the 28th rose above 23°C.
August - Dry, dull and rather cool.
The first 6 days of August were dry, fairly cloudy and with temperatures near, or rather below, normal. The weather then became more unsettled, although amounts of rain were small and several dry days occurred. It remained cool, and on the 19th, the temperature only reached 16.5°C. During the last week, there some sunny and rather warm days, and on the 28th the maximum temperature was close to 26°C, but on the 31st nearly 15mm of rain fell.
September - Rather dull with below average rainfall and near normal temperatures.
The 1st was a dull day with the temperature only rising to 14.6°C, but then temperatures rose close to average. The weather was fairly changeable, but amounts of rain were mostly small. However, on the 16th, over 9mm of rain fell. A few sunnier spells occurred, mainly at the beginning of the second week, and again during the third week, and at the end of the month it became rather warm or warm. On the 26th, the afternoon temperature was close to 24°C.
October - Mild and wet with average sunshine.
There was a warm and thundery start to the month, and on the 2nd the temperature almost reached 19°C. At the end of the first week it became somewhat cooler but the weather remained unsettled. Temperatures mostly stayed mild until late in the fourth week of October, but after an overnight low of 3°C., the temperature on the 24th only reached 10.7°C. The last week of the month was often windy and wet, and on the 26th, nearly 18mm of rain fell.
November - Very mild and sunny with below average rainfall.
Most of November was changeable with daily maxima during the first 3 weeks above average, and mostly around 12°C. However, on the 17th, the temperature climbed towards 15°C. Sunny spells occurred quite frequently and rain was generally light. However, on the 21st, nearly 20mm of rain fell, and under clear skies on the following night there was a slight frost. On the 23rd, after another overnight frost, the maximum temperature was only 8.3°C.
December - Dry with slightly above normal temperatures and average sunshine.
It was mild and changeable during the first 3 weeks, and although cloudy for lengthy spells, amounts of rain were mostly small. On the 9th, the temperature exceeded 12°C. On the 23rd, nearly 9mm of rain fell and then over Christmas the weather turned colder. There was a frost on the morning of the 25th, and several more frosts occurred during the last week of December. There was a little snow, too, and on the 30th, the temperature only reached 2.0°C.
