Weather Notes:-
23rd-26th February - Heavy snow in the Midlands, northern England and Wales. Over 70cm of level snow were recorded at Huddersfield (West Yorkshire) and Buxton (Derbyshire), with drifts of over 4m on the North York Moors and the Pennines.
26th September - During a thunderstorm at Fleet (Hampshire) 130mm of rain fell in 4 hours.
6th December - In a very frosty and foggy month across England, freezing fog on this day prevented the temperature in Manchester from rising above minus 5°C.

January - Dry, rather cold and dull.
The beginning of January was mild and unsettled. The maximum temperature on the 3rd was close to 12°C. and on the 5th over 5mm of rain fell. It then became generally less mild, and although the 9th was sunny, the weather was generally dry but rather cloudy. A spell of cold weather with frosty nights and some snow commenced on the 21st. On the 24th the temperature failed to rise above minus 0.2°C., but the last few days of the month were much milder.
February - Wet, rather mild and sunny.
The first half of February was mostly mild and changeable with some strong winds. The temperature on the 5th exceeded 13°C., and on the 10th, over 22mm of rain fell. A short interlude of cold weather began towards the end of the third week, and the maximum temperature on the 19th was only 3.0°C. There were some sunny days with sharp during the fourth week, but rain, preceded by snow, spread from the west on the 25th, and the rest of the month was milder.
March - Very sunny. mild and wet.
The first three weeks of the month were unsettled and on the17th, over 11mm of rain fell. Temperatures were mostly above normal, but on the 20th the maximum was only 8.1°C. There was plenty of sunshine from the third week onwards, and in the week beginning on the 23rd daily sunshine was almost unbroken with an average of over 10 hours per day. Some frosty nights occurred, but it became very mild for a while, and on the 28th the temperature reached 17°C.
April - Very dry with above normal temperatures and sunshine.
The first fortnight of April was mainly dry with plenty of sunshine. On the 8th, it was sunny all day, and during the second week it became warm. The afternoon temperature on the 11th exceeded 21°C. The weather became cooler, cloudier and less settled during the third week. There were grass frosts overnight, and the maximum temperature on the 20th was 7.0°C. Measurable rain only fell on 6 days during April, but on the 25th over 5mm was recorded.
May - Rather warm with below average sunshine and near normal rainfall.
The early part of the month was rather cool or cool, dull and unsettled. The maximum temperature on the 2nd was only 11.4°C., and on the 7th nearly 11mm of rain was measured. The weather became warmer during the second week, but it stayed fairly cloudy. There were dry, sunny and warm days with most of these occurring from the fourth week onwards. The afternoon temperature on the 22nd rose above 25°C., and on the 28th it was sunny throughout the day.
June - Sunny and rather warm with above average rainfall.
The first 9 days of June were mostly dry, sunny and very warm. The temperature reached 28°C. on the 4th, and close to 30°C. on the 5th. The second week was cloudier and cooler, and during the remainder of the month, although there was plenty of dry weather with temperatures above normal, there were some cooler spells with thundery showers. On the 15th, nearly 13mm of rain fell, and the afternoon temperature on the 18th failed to rise above 15.3°C.
July - Very warm, sunny and rather dry.
The beginning of July was mostly very warm with sunny periods. The second week became cooler and rather changeable, and the maximum temperature on the 13th was only 17.7°C. On the 15th, over 13mm of rain fell, but there were only 9 days during the month with measurable rain, and through the rest of July it was generally dry, sunny and warm. On the 26th the temperature exceeded 31°C., and the minimum on the following night was no lower than 18.9°C.
August - Very warm, dry and sunny.
Early August was mostly dry, sunny and very warm. The temperature on the 6th almost reached 32°C. There were some warm and humid nights, but during the second week it eventually became cooler, but still sunny. Rain only fell on 4 days during the month, and on the 15th, nearly 5mm was recorded. The coolest weather occurred early in the fourth week, and on the 22nd the maximum was 19.1°C. A short very warm spell occurred at the end of the week.
September - Very sunny, warm and rather wet.
The first week of September was mainly dry, sunny and very warm. The maximum temperature on the 4th exceeded 26°C. The sunny weather persisted into the second week, but it then became somewhat cloudier and rather unsettled. After mid month, dry and fairly sunny conditions predominated, but during the last week of September it became much cooler and changeable. On the 23rd, the temperature only reached 14.6°C., and on the 25th nearly 14mm of rain fell.
October - Rather dry and sunny with temperatures slightly above normal.
The early part of October was warm and quite sunny. It was sunny throughout the day on the4th, and on the 7th the maximum temperature was close to 20°C. Temperatures fell close to normal around mid month, and although theweather was changeable, amounts of rain were small and there were further spells of sunshine. The last week of October was much colder for a while, and on the 27th the temperature only rose to 6.5°C., and 5mm of rain fell.
November - Cold and dry with below average sunshine.
This was an anticyclonic month with fronts generally weak. However, winds were frequently from the northeast and it was cold and grey at times with occasional light rain or drizzle. Some bright and mild days occurred, more especially early in November. The temperature on the 7th rose above 13°C., but over 10mm of rain fell on the 15th. Cloud and breeze prevented much frost but the end of the month was cold. The temperature on the 30th only reached 4.6°C.

High pressure dominated the weather during December with only 5 days when measurable precipitation occurred. Although it was often rather cloudy and misty, there were only 6 frost-free nights. The lowest temperatures occurred early in the month, and the maximum on the 14th was only 0.1°C. At the end of the third week the weather became somewhat milder, although wintry showers occurred during the last week. On the 30th, nearly 4mm of rain fell.
