Weather Notes:-
26th January - The temperature at the highland valley (350m AMSL) of Dalwhinnie (Inverness-shire) only rose to minus 11°C. after an overnight low of minus 19°C.
18th February - The temperature exceeded 18°C at King's Langley (Hertfordshire).
12th May - The maximum temperature was close to 31°C. in Central London.

January - Very cold, dull and rather dry.

The first week was changeable and fairly mild. During the second week it became cold with sleet and snow. A mild interlude gave a maximum temperature above 8°C on the 18th, but it was very windy with gusts of 60kn. It then became very cold and frosty with some freezing fog. On the 26th, after a minimum below minus 7°C., the highest temperature during the day was only minus 2.1°C. Snow turned to rain on the 30th, giving 10mm in total, and it became milder.

February - Very mild with below average sunshine and rainfall.

The first fortnight of February was mostly mild and unsettled. On the 12th, over 6mm of rain fell and it then became colder but mainly dry with sunny periods. On the 15th, the temperature only rose to 5.7°C., but the northerly winds gave way to mild southerlies and the temperature on the 18th exceeded 16°C. It then became cooler again, and on the night of the 20th/21st there was a  frost, but then mild, but often cloudy and damp, weather set in for the rest of the month. 

March - Dry, mild and sunny.

The beginning of March was rather unsettled, but rainfall amounts were small and there was plenty of sunshine. Temperatures were mostly slightly above normal, but the maximum  on the 2nd was only 6.7°C. Slight frosts occurred, but after mid month it became milder and frost-free. It became warm at times during the last 10 days, and the high on the 23rd was close to 21°C. The last few days of the month were unsettled, and on the 26th nearly 12mm of rain fell. 

April - Mild, dry and rather sunny.

After a rather unsettled start to April, but also with sunny spells and temperatures generally above average, it became mostly dry and warm. On the 16th, the afternoon temperature rose above 24°C., and on the following day the maximum value was almost as high. Towards the end of the month it became unsettled and eventually much colder. Nearly 9mm of rain fell on both the 26th and 28th, and wintry showers accompanied a high of only 6.8°C. on the 30th.

May - Rather wet and warm with slightly below average sunshine.

There was a cool start to May and on the first morning there was a ground frost. The 3rd was a particularly miserable day with nearly 17mm of rain falling and a maximum temperature of only 9.4°C. The weather improved considerably during the second week, and the temperature on the 12th exceeded 28°C. It was thundery at first, but during the third week it became less humid and there were several warm and sunny days right up until the end of the month.  

June - Slightly below average temperature and sunshine, near normal rainfall.

The first fortnight of June was changeable with temperatures close to average. Rainfall was generally light, although nearly 5mm fell on the 8th, A short fine and warm spell occurred after mid month, and after an almost cloudless day on the 18th, the high on the 19th reached 25°C. It then became somewhat cooler as the unsettled weather returned. The 28th was an unpleasant late June day with nearly 5mm of rain falling and a maximum temperature of only 13.8°C.

July - Above average temperatures and rainfall, near normal sunshine.

There was a cool start to July, and the maximum temperature on the 4th was only 17.3°C. It then became mostly warm with sunny periods. On the night of the 14th/15th there were prolonged thunderstorms giving a spectacular display of lightning. Nearly 25mm of rain was measured, but on the following day it became hot and humid with the maximum temperature close to 29°C. The rest of the month was cooler, but still with a few sunny days.

August - Dry, rather cool and dull.

The early part of August was mostly sunny and warm. On the 4th the temperature reached 28°C. At the end of the first week it became rather cool and changeable. The maximum temperature on the 7th was only 14.8°C. Some heavy rain occurred, and on the 9th, over 11mm was measured. The weather became more settled towards the end of the second week, but skies were often  rather cloudy, and  temperatures were mostly below the August average.

September - Very dull with below average rainfall and slightly above normal temperatures.

In this unusually cloudy month, the nights generally remained warm, and the lack of sunshine led to daytime temperatures mostly below average. On the 12th, the overnight low failed to fall below 16.9°C., but the following day was bright and warm with an afternoon high near 24°C. Over 7mm of rain fell on the 13th, but generally the rain was light and drizzly. The last week of the month was cooler but sunnier, and on the 25th the maximum temperature was only 13.7°C.

October - Rather warm with above average sunshine and below normal rainfall.

High pressure dominated the weather early in October, and during the opening 19 days there was no measurable rain. It was cool at times during the first week, and the maximum temperature on the 4th was only 11.4°C. There were several warm days during the second week and the high exceeded 21°C. on the 11th. From the 20th until the end of the month the weather was changeable, and often wet and windy. On the 23rd, nearly 12mm of rain fell.
 
November - Very dry, dull and rather mild.

There was  light rain early in the month, otherwise the first 3 weeks were dry and mild. The temperature on the 4th rose close to 16°C. The 11th was a rare sunny day during November, although later in the month, as the weather became unsettled, there were a few more sunny interludes. On the 22nd over 4mm of rain fell, 1 of only 5 days with measurable rain. The month was frost-free, although the last few days were rather cold, and the high on 27th was only 6.2°C.  

December - Rather wet with sunshine amounts and temperatures slightly above average.

December began mild and unsettled. On the 1st, the maximum temperature exceeded 12°C. Towards the end of the first week it became dry and sunny, but the southwesterly winds backed to the east and it became cold. There were several frosty nights, and on the 9th the temperature only reached 1.3°C. Mild and unsettled weather returned at the end of the second week, and after a very mild, damp and breezy Christmas, over 19mm of rain fell on the 28th.
