In the year that the first Kashmir war was fought between the newly independent states of India and Pakistan, the first polaroid camera was manufactured, and the wedding took place at Westminster Abbey of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
Weather Notes:-
24th February - The 14th, and last, day of continuous frost at Greenwich (East London) and for several other places in southern England, especially over hills. Temperatures on the night of the 23rd/24th locally fell below minus 17°C.
16th July - Over 125mm rain fell in 3 hours at Wisley (Surrey).
16th August - Maximum temperatures of 34°C. were recorded at Bournemouth and Southampton, nearly 33°C. on the Isle of Wight, and close to 28°C. on the Isles of Scilly.
In London...
January - Cold, dry and rather sunny.
The beginning of January was fairly mild and changeable, and after some wintry weather at the end of the first week, it became mild during the second week. Over 5mm of rain was recorded on the 8th, but there were several dry days, and on the 16th, the temperature reached 11°C. Very cold east winds. with some snow, set in at the start of the fourth week, and after a minimum temperature below minus 9°C. early on the 29th, the high for the day was only minus 2.7°C.
February - Very cold, dull and rather dry.
Snow lay on the ground throughout this month. Sleet and snow gave 7mm of 'rain' on the 8th, but there were many dry days. It was very dull with no sunshine occurring between the 2nd and 22nd inclusive. Despite the cloud, frost occurred on every night after the 11th and there were 8 consecutive days with continuous frost. On the 17th the maximum temperature was only minus 2.4°C. There were sunny periods during the last week but with severe overnight frosts.
March - Very wet, dull and cold.
The first 9 days of March were mostly very cold, and after some sunny days, 15cm of fresh snow fell on the 4th. The maximum temperature on the 6th was only 0.7°C. A thaw of lying snow commenced on the 10th, and after a slight frost on the night of the 14th/15th the remainder of the month was frost-free and days slowly became milder. It was very unsettled, with only 5 days without measurable rain. Some of the rain was heavy, and on the 29th nearly 17mm fell.
April - Above average sunshine, below normal rainfall, and slightly above average temperatures.
The early part of April was unsettled with temperatures generally below normal with a few overnight grass frosts. On the 2nd, nearly 8mm of rain fell and the maximum temperature was only 7.0°C. At the end of the second week the weather became warmer with sunny periods. On the 13th, the afternoon temperature rose above 18°C. After mid month it was cooler at times, but no air frosts occurred, and there were plenty of dry days with spells of sunshine.
May - Warm and rather dry with below average sunshine.
The beginning of May was cool and changeable. The maximum temperature on the 2nd was only 8.1°C., and on the 4th, nearly 7mm of rain fell. The weather became warmer during the second and third weeks, and although there were several dry days it was often rather cloudy. Towards the end of the month, the weather became very warm, or hot, and mostly sunny. On the 30th, after an early morning low of 16.5°C., the temperature during the afternoon rose above 30°C.
June - Wet and rather warm with near normal sunshine.
The first 3 days of June were hot and humid with periods of hazy sunshine. The temperature on the 3rd almost reached 33°C., but 2 days later the high was only 18°C. Temperatures were mostly near, or a little above normal until the last week of the month when some very warm days returned. The weather was often thundery, and on the 15th the day was cool and wet. The maximum temperature was only 15.3°C. and nearly 14mm of rain was measured.
July - Dry and rather warm with below average sunshine.
The beginning of July was rather cloudy and changeable, but rainfall amounts were small. Temperatures were generally above normal, but on the 9th it was cloudy and the maximum failed to exceed 16.4°C. Around mid month, the weather became warm and thundery, and on the 17th nearly 10mm of rain fell. It became cooler for a while, but during the last week there were some warm, sunny days. The highest temperature on the 27th was above 29°C.
August - Very sunny, warm and dry.
The first week of August was rather unsettled, and apart from a warm day on the 1st, temperatures were mostly near normal. On the the 7th, the maximum temperature was only 19.4°C. With the exception of the 23rd, when a thundery shower gave over 5mm of rain, the month was dry from the 6th until the end of the month. There were many sunny days, and from the second week until the last 2 days of August it was very warm. The afternoon high on the 16th was near 31°C.
September - Dry, warm and rather sunny.
The month began with a week of dry, fairly sunny, weather. It was warm at times, and temperatures remained above average through the second and third weeks although the weather became rather unsettled. On the 15th, the afternoon high was close to 25°C., but on the 18th over 16mm of rain fell. During the last week of September it was often dry with sunny periods, but temperatures were lower. On the 24th, the maximum temperature was only 14.1°C.
October - Very dry with slightly above normal sunshine and average temperatures.
High pressure covered much of Britain during the first 3 weeks of October bringing almost unbroken dry weather. Cloud amounts were variable, but there were several warm and sunny days, especially early in the month. On the 7th, the afternoon temperature exceeded 21°C. A slight frost occurred at the end of the third week, and then it became rather changeable and colder. On the 23rd, nearly 2mm of rain fell, and on the 29th, the highest temperature was only 9.5°C.
November - Dry and rather sunny with above average temperatures.
There were some sunny days in early November, but at the end of the first week there was dense fog which persisted through much of the 6th and 7th. The second week was unsettled, and on the 9th, over 6mm of rain fell. Further dry days then occurred,, and it became very mild for a while. On both the 22nd and 23rd the temperature reached 16°C. At the end of the month it became cold, and after a sharp overnight frost, the temperature on the 30th only reached 1.9°C.
December - Dull with above average rainfall and temperature.
Around dawn on the first morning of December the temperature was minus 5°C., and the maximum on the 1st was only 0.5°C. At the end of the first week it became milder and changeable, and on the 5th, nearly 13mm of rain fell. Temperatures were not far from average during the second and third weeks, and although unsettled weather prevailed, there were several dry days. Around Christmas it became very mild, and the highest temperature on the 27th was near 13°C.
