Weather in South London during February 2015
A cold month, and wintry at times during the first week.
Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during February 2015 was 7.8 Celsius (46F), and that was just over 1 Celsius (2F) below normal. The average minimum temperature was 1.7 Celsius (35F), and that was 1.3 Celsius (2F) below the monthly normal.  

The highest temperature recorded during February was 12.5 Celsius (55F) on the 25th, but the next highest was 11.0 Celsius (52F) on the 26th, and there were only 3 other days when the temperature exceeded 10 Celsius (50F). The coldest days all occurred before mid month, and after the 12th all maxima were higher than 6 Celsius (43F). Between the 1st and 12th there were 9 days with highs of 6 Celsius (43F) or lower, including the whole of the first week of February. On the 12th, a maximum of 4.4 Celsius (40F) occurred, and 3 consecutive days beginning on the 2nd also had maxima below 5 Celsius (41F). The 3rd and 4th each had highs between 4 and 5 Celsius (40F), but the temperature on the 2nd only reached 2.8 Celsius (37F), the coldest day of the month.

There was only 1 notably mild night during the month and that was the 25th/26th, when a minimum temperature of 9.2 Celsius (49F) was recorded. The only other night with a minimum above 5 Celsius (41F) was the 14th/15th when 5.8 Celsius (42F) was logged. On most nights (19) temperatures fell to between 0 and 5 Celsius (32-41F), but occasionally values dipped just below 0 Celsius (32F), and on 2 nights minima were below minus 3 Celsius (27F). On the 1st/2nd a low of minus 3.2 Celsius (26F) occurred, but the coldest night was 21st/22nd when the temperature fell to minus 3.6 Celsius (25F).     

Frost

There were 7 air frosts during February, and that's 1 above the average. Only 3 air frosts occurred before mid month, but the frost on the 8th/9th was slight, with minima on the other 2 frosty nights, the 1st/2nd and 2nd/3rd,  below minus 2 Celsius (28F). Of the 4 air frosts after mid month, there were 2 with minima below minus 2 Celsius, the 17th/18th and 21st/22nd, and 2 that were slight, the 15th/16th and the 26th/27th. There were 18 grass frosts, and that's 5 above average. Each of the first 10 nights of February had a grass frost, and there was a total of 12 grass frosts before mid month. The lowest grass minima, with readings below minus 5 Celsius (23F), were evenly distributed with 3 occurring before mid month and a similar figure for the second half of February. There were 2 particularly low grass readings, with minus 8.0 Celsius (18F) occurring on the morning of the 2nd, and minus 8.4 Celsius (17F) measured early on the 22nd.    

Rain

A total of 50.6 millimetres (2 ins.) of rain fell during February,  and this was less than 10% above the long-term average. There were 16 days with significant*  rain and this was 2 above average, and there were 9 wet** days during February and that was 1 day below average for the month. The early part of February was fairly dry with only around 4 millimetres (0.16 ins) of rain recorded in the first 11 days, including 6 consecutive days without measurable rain between the 6th and 11th. Rain returned on the night of the 12th/13th, and during the 13th a total of 9.6 millimetres (0.4 ins) of rain was recorded, making it the wettest day of the month. Over 5 millimetres (0.2 ins) of rain fell on the 16th, and after 2 dry days, steady rain on the afternoon and evening of the 19th produced another 9 millimetres (0.35 ins). There was only 1 more dry day during the rest of the month, and both the 22nd and 26th received over 5 millimetres (0.2 ins) of rain.

*Significant rain is defined as one that has 0.2mm or more. ** A wet day is defined as one that has 1mm, or more, of rain 

Thunderstorms

There were no thunderstorms observed in Morden during February.     

Hail 

There was soft hail observed in showers on the afternoon and late evening of the 5th, and also on the afternoon of the 23rd.

Snow

There were 4 days of sleet or snow during February and that's average for the month.  On the 1st there was some sleet in the early hours, but on the 3rd there was a period of snow, moderate at times, before dawn, and although this turned to drizzle and snow grains before mid morning, there were 2 centimetres (1 inch) of lying snow at 0900 hours. Only a few patches of snow remained by the following morning, and although some granular snow fell on the morning of the 5th, it failed to settle. A snow shower also occurred late on the evening of the 5th. The last wintry precipitation of the month, in the form of sleet, occurred early on the 21st.

Wind

There was no dominant wind direction during February, although winds from the northwesterly quadrant were more prominent than normal, and it is more than 20 years since February had fewer winds from a southwesterly direction. Overall, the winds were mainly gentle or moderate in strength, but fresh south to southwesterlies occurred at the beginning of the fourth week.  On 9 days, gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph), with 6 of the windier days occurring after mid month. The highest gust was 30 knots (34 mph) on the 22nd.

Fog

There was no fog observed in this part of Morden during February.
